Caravanning - A British Thing?

I don’t know about you but here in britan almost everyone has been on Caravan Holidays at least once in their lives. I remember going with my dad to look at a few caravans for sale, trying to find a decent tourer so as we could go to the south of france for a month in the summer. I have also been on a fair few UK touring Holidays, typically we would go to north wales because it was where we had lived previously but also the lake district is pretty awesome for good Camping Holidays. So if you - my blog reader have ever been on camping trips outside of the uk (and France) where did you go? I would be interested in hearing your stories of camping abroad. I am fairly sure the American Touring caravan market is pretty huge but personally I picture the caravan as iconically British thing - who else would bother putting so much metal on a single axis then tow it not very far just to save £20? and the only reason the tarpaulin was invented was surely for the summer weather in the uk!
